Grant Activity: Based at the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, the training institute of Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Assignment may include lectures presented to classes of junior diplomats from Malaysia as well as from other countries in the region and elsewhere in the Middle East and Africa. Lectures on topics of American foreign policy may also be offered to the public. The grantee should have a strong plan for independent research on some topic pertaining to the U.S. in Southeast Asia or international relations within Asia. The grantee may also work with the Institute to expand its research program and may assist with master's degree programs offered at the Institute through Malaysia's leading universities.

Specialization(s): Preferences will be given to specialists in international relations with emphasis on Southeast Asia and U.S. interactions in the region; U.S. foreign policy in the 20th century with emphasis on Southeast Asia; and/or Asian international relations. Scholars of international relations and foreign policy with backgrounds in other regions or without regional specializations are welcome to apply but must be willing to commit to a major research effort focused in some way on the United States and Southeast Asia or Malaysia.

Language: English is widely spoken throughout Malaysia, particularly within the academic and diplomatic communities, and most graduate instruction is in English.

Length of Grant: 3 months to 10 months
|
|
Starting Date: Anytime after May or June 2009 but must be agreeable with Institute. Grant activities should be completed by April 2010.
|

Comments: For research purposes, a reading knowledge of Bahasa Malaysia will be an advantage but can be developed during the grant period. Applicants without substantial background in politics, political development and/or foreign policy studies in Southeast Asia or Malaysia are strongly encouraged to apply for an award of 5 months or longer to allow time to acclimate.
