Grant Activity: Duties include teaching one weekly 4 hour seminar in the contemporary history master's program. The grantee will also lead one 2 hour seminar every week. Some seminars will be organized by the international network "Meetings in the South", which joins researchers from the host institution with researchers from Spain and Italy. The theme of these seminars will be "War and Peace". Other seminars will be hosted by the host institution. These will be open seminars that are offered to master's and Ph.D. students free of charge. Both the "War and Peace" and the open seminars will be held on alternate weeks so the grantee will not lead two seminars in one week. Total lecturing hours amount to 6 hours per week (16 seminars). There will also be 2 meeting hours per week. The average size of class will be 25-50 students. At the beginning of the term, scholars give students a list of books which will be discussed in class. Students purchase these books and scholars will give students copies of other texts for reading assignments.

Comments: Housing is not provided but the host institution will assist the grantee in finding housing. Assistance will be given by Ms. Natalia Manso, phone +351.21793359, e-mail ihc@fcsh.unl.pt. Approximate monthly cost of housing 800 euro. The host institution is located in the center of Lisbon, close to the Portuguese National Archives and the National Library. The host institution will provide computer facilities (PC, laptop and printers), Internet access (wireless) and e-mail, office space and secretarial assistance.
