Please be sure to read and follow the general application instructions. However, when responding to the following items on the application form, use these special instructions.

Curriculum Vitae/Resume
Please attach to the application your curriculum vitae, not to exceed six pages, and if you are a teacher, a syllabus from a course that you teach presently. 

Project Statement
Address (1) the scope of your current teaching and/or professional responsibilities, (2) how the seminar will be useful to you in your teaching, and/or professional activities (3) how the curricula or activities/programs at your home institution incorporate subjects related to the seminar topic, (4) how subjects related to the seminar may be incorporated into the curriculum or new programs in the future and (5) how you would share the impact of the seminar with a wider audience. If you have had a Fulbright grant or other international experiences in the past, describe the impact it had on your professional life and on your institution. Please note that the project statement is a critical part of your application. The recommended length of the statement is three or four single-spaced pages. 

Language Proficiency Report

Required from all applicants, except native speakers and those with a Ph.D. in German language/literature. Not required when seminar is conducted in English.

References
References should be sought from the three persons you listed in item 28. They should include (1) a colleague in your academic or professional field with whom you are presently associated, (2) someone outside your home institution who can judge your experience and ability to benefit from the seminar and (3) another person who fits (1) or (2).

Submit only three references. Make three photocopies each of the Special Instructions for References (below) and the Fulbright Reference Letter instructions. (See Fulbright Scholar Prog. Application form) Complete Part I of the latter form and indicate in Part II to whom and by when the letter should be returned. Advise referees to follow these special instructions in place of the fourth bulleted item of Part II of the general instructions.

Send both photocopied instructions to each of the three persons you have asked to write a reference for you. CIES also recommends that you include a copy of your project statement. If referees will be submitting their letters directly to CIES, request that they inform you when they have mailed their letter. If you use the online application form, send a copy of the special instructions below to each referee.

Review Process
Applications will be reviewed in the United States by an advisory committee of persons in the subject areas covered in the seminar; reviewers are, in many instances, alumni of this or other Fulbright programs. Papers of candidates recommended for awards will also be reviewed by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and the German Fulbright Commission in Berlin, which makes the final selection of grantees.

Special Instructions for References
Please address the following points:

Applicant's professional qualifications
Knowledge of his/her discipline, teaching ability, professional background, and willingness to learn about and discuss issues beyond his/her discipline.

Applicant's personal qualifications
Ability to function well in a group; resiliency and suitability for a program with a demanding schedule

Applicant's institutional relationships (if they are known to you)
Expected benefits to the home institution of the applicant's participation; commitment of the institution to German studies/seminar topic.

Application deadline for the 2009-2010 program is November 1, 2008.

Please be sure to sign your letter and return it to the applicant or CIES, as indicated. If you submit the letter directly to CIES, please inform the applicant when you have mailed the letter.
