Chinese/East Asian Studies
Award #9269
Category:  Lecturing
Deadline:  August 1, 2008
Grant Activity: Teach an introductory course analyzing the domestic politics of the People's Republic of China, with particular emphasis on the reform era and covering political history, policy process and institutional issues, leadership and the challenge of socioeconomic modernization. By focusing on recurrent and substantive policy issues in Chinese politics, the course should provide students with a good grasp of the challenges ahead in Chinese politics in the 21st century. While focusing on domestic politics, the course should also include some discussion of China's foreign policy, especially with regard to Japan and the U.S. The course is expected to be an 8-10 ECTS credit course and to cover 4 class sessions of 40 minutes each per week, of which one session would be reserved for discussion. A comparable course focusing on contemporary Chinese economics and/or business, but taking relevant political and legal issues into consideration, would also be an option. Grantee would also be asked to advise on program structure, possibly help establish further contacts with American universities and present papers on issues related to China and East Asia at the University of Iceland and the University of Akureyri. Further cooperation in the activities of the Confucius Institute, to be established at the University of Iceland in 2008, would also be desirable.
Specialization(s): Contemporary Chinese politics or related fields such as economics or business.
Language: English is sufficient.
Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. with teaching experience expected.
Location: Icelandic Center for Asian Studies, University of Iceland
Length of Grant: 4 months to 5 months
Starting Date: September 2009 or January 2010
Comments: Apart from teaching the course, an experienced lecturer from the field of Chinese or East Asian studies would be of substantial benefit for the further construction and development of the program. Asian studies have a long history in American universities, whose Asian studies departments tend to focus more on contemporary issues than do such departments in European universities. Contact person is Professor Geir Sigurdsson, geirs@hi.is. University Web site address: www.hug.hi.is/page/english. A letter of invitation is not required. Housing will be provided for the grantee.
