Comments: Applicants for this award should have graduate training in China studies, facility in Mandarin and a record of research and publications in the field. Applicants proposing projects on modern China may spend 1 month of a 6-8 month grant or up to 3 months of a 9-10 month grant in Hong Kong at facilities such as the Universities Service Center for China Research (USC) (www.usc.cuhk.edu.hk) or using research facilities in Taiwan. Applicants with projects on pre-modern China may spend comparable amounts of time in Taiwan. Applicants who wish to work at the USC or at one of the other Hong Kong research centers should contact the USC or those centers directly for assistance in setting up their visit. Applicants who wish to spend part of their grant period in Taiwan should arrange an affiliation with a Taiwan institution and secure a letter of invitation.
