Grant Activity: Teach an introductory course for undergraduates in computational analysis of gene sequences and protein structures, including sequence alignment, biological database design, geometric analysis of protein structure, macromolecular simulation and gene expression analysis. Possibly also teach a more advanced graduate course in bioinformatics with particular focus on comparative genomics and gene expression analysis. Database structures and programming and scripting languages should be discussed, with particular focus on providing students with tools to test biological hypothesis with the use of bioinformatics. This course would therefore involve more extensive laboratory sessions. In both cases, the target audience involves students in molecular biology with limited computer science background, but would also be offered to engineering and mathematics majors, who are taking a minor in biological science. Each class has four lectures of 40 minutes per week and class size varies. Students buy books and get handouts. The grantee would be expected to shape the course's outline according to his/her strengths and the course can be over one 14 week semester or divided into two or more separate courses. He/she would also have access to all facilities for his/her own research and ample opportunities for collaboration with faculty and local scientists

Comments: Contact person is Professor Olafur S. Andresson, head of the department of biology, osa@hi.is. University Web site address: www.raunvisindi.hi.is. A letter of invitation is not required. Housing will be provided for the grantee. Although there are substantial activities in molecular biology and informatics and a genomics company in the area, currently there is no faculty position in bioinformatics at the University of Iceland. With rapidly growing graduate programs at the university, there is a strong need for teaching in this field. A lecturer in this field would therefore be very helpful and possibly generate new research interactions between Iceland and the U.S.
