Comments: The new president of Turkmenistan is taking steps away from some of the policies of the recent past and has started a slow, cautious reform path toward greater openness. Recent policy has emphasized the value of exchange and cooperation with other countries, especially the United States. Any work in the country will require flexibility, perseverance, and creativity in order to help make the most of still challenging conditions in an optimistic and energized environment.
