Award #9153
Category:
Lecturing, Lecturing/Research or Research
Deadline:
August 1, 2008
Grant Activity: Teach graduate courses and/or conduct research. Lecturing is in English and has generally been limited to graduate courses, as undergraduate instruction is in Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian national language). Grantees typically also conduct faculty seminars on teaching methods and curriculum development or other issues of professional interest. Grantees are also frequently invited to lecture at other Malaysian universities. For lecturing or lecturing/research grantees, courses and seminars to be taught are planned in conjunction with the host department, but applicants should propose and include sample syllabi for specific courses they are prepared to teach. In the case of applications for research and lecturing/research, collaborative research proposals to be conducted jointly with host faculty are preferred.
Specialization(s): While applications will be accepted in all disciplines, the following areas are of particular interest to the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange: civic education and democracy, global and intercultural communications, global stability and conflict, economic globalization, educational issues pertaining to the roles of the university in society or the future of higher education.
Language: English is widely spoken in Malaysia, particularly within the academic community, and graduate instruction is in English. For research purposes, some knowledge of Bahasa Malaysia will be helpful.
Additional Qualifications: Professionals may apply if they have at least 3 years of university teaching experience beyond terminal degrees.
Location: Affiliations will be arranged at public and private universities throughout Peninsular and East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak).
Length of Grant: 5 months or 10 months
Starting Date: May or June 2009, or November 2009 preferred. Other dates are also possible but research grantees must complete work by April 2010.
Comments: Grants are traditionally for either a single semester (5 months) or a full academic year (10 months), though applications proposing stays of at least 3 months will also be considered. While applicants may specify preferred host institutions and are welcome to include an invitation letter from a specific institution, the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange reserves the right to make assignments based on the best match between the expertise of the grantee and the needs of prospective host universities, and to determine the final affiliation based on the needs and interests of applicants and contributions by prospective hosts. Applicants proposing a diverse range of potential courses will be more easily placed.
