Grant Activity: Conduct research in one country for 3-9 months or in two or three countries for 5-9 months. Grantees are expected to give occasional lectures and seminars in consultation with host universities and U.S. Embassies. Applicants should discuss their proposals with CIES Africa program staff and download "Information and Instructions for African Regional Research Program Applicants," found with the award description online at www.cies.org/award_book/award2009/award/ARRP.pdf, or request a copy from CIES.
Language: Appropriate language facility is needed for research in non-English-speaking areas.
Additional Qualifications: Evidence of a scholarly research record after having obtained the terminal degree in the field of specialization for the proposed project is required. Applications from academics and professionals will be considered.
Location: Applicants must arrange affiliation and include letter of invitation.
Length of Grant: 3 months to 9 months
Starting Date: As early as July 2009; no later than January 2010
Comments: Evidence of local support for the project or interest in collaboration must be provided. Such letters must be submitted as part of the application for each proposed country. Some previous research topics have included the following: "Improving the Performance of Community Based Natural Resource Management Programs in Botswana: An Economic Perspective," "Revitalizing Wild Silk Production to Meet Conservation and Poverty Alleviation Goals in Madagascar" and "Performance of the Great Baga D'mba in Guinea." Because grantees are responsible for obtaining their own research clearances and visas, scholars should request information on procedures from colleagues in Africa at an early date and keep CIES informed.
