Length of Grant: 3 months to 9 months
Starting Date: As early as July 2009; no later than January 20010

Comments: Evidence of local support for the project or interest in collaboration must be provided. Letters of invitation from each proposed country must be included in the application. Given the importance of research on pressing issues regarding the AIDS epidemic in Africa, the Fulbright Program has funded AIDS-related research grants for several years. Grants have been made to scholars across a broad range of disciplines, from creative writing to ethnomusicology, sociology to nursing. Examples of research topics include "Long-Term Anti-Retroviral Drug Treatment and the Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome Among Ugandans with HIV/AIDS," "Public Awareness Materials of HIV/AIDS Campaigns in Nigeria" and "Feasibility and Sustainability of Non Governmental Organization and Private Sector Partnerships in HIV/AIDS Prevention in Tanzania." Because grantees are responsible for obtaining their own research clearances and visas, scholars should request information on procedures from colleagues in Africa at an early date and keep CIES informed.
