Charles A. Johnson joined the Division of Research and Graduate Studies as a Senior Associate Vice President for Research on November 1, 2009. Previously, Johnson served as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts for eight years. He is a Professor and former Department Head of Political Science at Texas A&M University.
In his role as Senior Associate Vice President for Research, Johnson focuses on a number of critical university-wide responsibilities, including facilitating the implementation of the Texas A&M University Academic Master Plan Research Roadmap. Johnson collaborates with constituent groups across the university to facilitate the development and sustain the existence of high-impact, well-integrated interdisciplinary research programs. He also supports research programs that advance diversity and extend the international reach of Texas A&M University.
While serving as Dean of Liberal Arts, advancements in the college included the emergence of nationally ranked departments, increased numbers of award-winning faculty, as well as expanded international opportunities for students. His accomplishments include raising more than $41M for the college’s capital campaign, overseeing the expansion of several disciplinary and interdisciplinary degree programs, and increasing the diversity of the college’s faculty and academic programs.
Johnson is an accomplished researcher and scholar. He has co-authored three books and numerous journal and professional papers in the area of judicial politics and public policy; been funded by the National Science Foundation; received a Fulbright Fellowship in Japan; and held several disciplinary leadership posts. Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State College, his master’s degree in government at the University of Maryland, and his doctorate in political science at the University of Kentucky. |
