2004-2005 Toward Equality: The Global Empowerment of Women
Focus Group V: Voices of Women
Co-Chairs/Members: Mona Ali, Omar Sougou
Goal Statement:
To conduct a comparative study of the representation
of women in Egyptian and Senegalese folk stories.
Next Steps:
- Compiling a collection of Egyptian and Senegalese
folk stories.
- Analyzing the stories from a gendered perspective,
tracing the different images of women presented in
them
- Depicting similarities and differences in the stories
in an attempt to reach certain conclusions about the
space allotted to women in both the Egyptian and Senegalese
cultures
- Presenting our findings in one of the following
forums: African Studies Conference, African Literature
Association, Conference of African Studies Association
- Publishing an English version of the paper in the
Senegalese periodical edited by Omar and an Arabic
version in Tiba, the magazine edited by Mona
Long-term Goal:
Producing two collections of the stories, one of Senegalese
stories to be translated and published in Arabic and
another of Egyptian stories to be translated into English
and published in Senegal; both to include a gender sensitive
reading of the stories in the introductions to the two
volumes. |
