2001-2002 Challenges of Health in a Borderless World

New Century Scholars at the Rockefeller Bellagio Conference Center, Italy
New Century Scholars at the Rockefeller Bellagio Conference Center, Italy
Welcome

The term Global Health stands for a new context, a new awareness and a new strategic approach in matters of international health. Its focus is the impact of global interdependence on the determinants of health, the transfer of health risks and the policy response of countries, international organizations and the many other actors in the global health arena. Its goal is the equitable access to health in all regions of the globe.

The term International Health has mainly been used to encompass approaches to health problems in developing countries and the flow of resources and knowledge from the developed to the developing world. Global Health in contrast focuses on relationships of interdependence that transcend this division as well as national frontiers and policy sectors, in particular

the global distribution of health and disease and their determinants,

the impact of globalization on health and

the changing nature of global health governance.

NCS Distinguished Leader

Ilona Kickbusch is Head of the Division of Global Health at Yale University School of Medicine, in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. Her major research interests are in global health policy and governance, partnerships for health development, healthy communities and social determinants of health. Present research projects include health literacy, international health promotion development and health and security.

Prof. Kickbusch joined Yale after a long career with the World Health Organization (WHO), where she most recently held the position of Director for Health Promotion, Education and Communication at WHO Headquarters in Geneva. Prior to that she was the Director of Lifestyles and Health for WHO’s European Regional Office. During her tenure at WHO she initiated and headed a number of innovative programs, including Health Promoting Schools, the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, and Healthy Cities. Through her initiative, WHO Europe made Healthy Cities a major regional project and inaugurated a series of yearly symposia that helped turn it into a worldwide movement.

Professor Kickbusch continues to act as an advisor to the WHO, the Commission of the European Union, the Pan American Health Organization, and various Foundations and NGO’s on issues surrounding global development and health promotion.

Prof. Kickbusch is a native of Germany where she received her Ph.D. in political science from the University of Kostanz. She has published widely on the social determinants of health and has particular research interests in global health policy and governance and the interface between global and local health developments.
