Curriculum Vitae/Resume

Project Statement
The project statement is a critical part of your application because reviewers give significant weight to the quality of the project statement in evaluating applications. Therefore, it is essential that you provide full responses to the items below.

Your project statement should address

the reasons that you wish to be considered for the program,
the relation of the program to your current job responsibilities,
the impact your participation will have on your career and professional development,
the impact your participation will have on your institution and your community and
the ways you will share what you have gained with others at your institution and elsewhere (e.g. presentations at national or regional NAFSA conferences, publications, etc.)

If you have had a Fulbright grant or other international experience in the past, be sure to describe the impact it had on your professional life and on your institution.

Applicants who are senior administrators should clearly and fully explain their responsibilities for international programs and activities on their campus and the percentage of their time devoted to these programs and activities. Applicants who are faculty but who are involved in the administration of international programs should indicate the relative distribution of their time to teaching and administrative responsibilities. Applicants for the German program who are in the field of career counseling should describe the international dimension of their jobs.

Institutional Statement

Applications must include a brief statement (1-2 pages) describing the nature and scope of their institution's international education programs and activities, current and projected. This should be a separate document and not included in the personal project statement. (For Japan or Korea, include the number--not percentage--of foreign students at your institution as well as the number of students from Japan or Korea. To insure that this information is clear and obvious, it is recommended that you present it in a tabular format.) If you are from a nonacademic institution, you must include information about your organization. Note: The organization must be a non-profit.

References:

Submit only three references. References should be sought from (1) the person to whom you report at your institution, (2) someone outside your home institution who can judge your experience and ability to benefit from the seminar and (3) a colleague in your field from your own or another institution. One reference must be from your present institution. At least one of the references should be an administrator at your institution.

Procedure:

If using the printed or PDF version of the application. Fill in the appropriate parts of Part I (Part I relates to future confidentiality of the letter) and Part II (Part II indicates the date by which the letter should be returned and to whom) of the "Fulbright Reference Letter Instructions" and), make photocopies of the form for each referee as well as a copy of the "Special Instructions for Referees" and send to the three persons writing reference letters for you. Remind your reference writers to follow the special instructions found here rather than those found in bullet #4 on the printed form.

If using the online version of the application. In your application, you will provide the names of your references and an e-mail address for each. They will receive a password and instructions from the administrator regarding how to provide the letter. Be sure that you alert them to expect this message and send them the "Special Instructions for Referees" as well as a copy of your project statement.

BE SURE TO REVIEW THE APPLICATION BEFORE SUBMISSION TO INSURE THAT YOU HAVE COMPLETED EACH SECTION AND INCLUDED ALL REQUIRED PARTS.

Special Instructions for Referees:

  Please address the following points:

Applicant's professional qualifications
Evidence of achievements that are pertinent to international educational exchange; administrative capabilities; evidence that the applicant will benefit from participation in the program; demonstrated willingness to learn about and discuss issues that go beyond the applicant's own responsibilities.
Applicant's institutional relationships (if they are known to you)
Anticipated benefits to the institution of the applicant's participation in the program; commitment of the institution to international education.
Applicant's personal qualifications and qualities
Ability to work with colleagues from a variety of institutions and to function well in a group; resiliency and suitability for a rigorous program with a physically demanding schedule.

Review Process

An advisory committee composed of fellow international education professionals who are in most cases alumni of the respective programs review the applications for CIES. Members of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and the Fulbright commissions in Berlin, Tokyo or Seoul review the applications of the recommended candidates and make the selections.
