Fulbright U.S. - Turkey Initiative

Due to a recent expansion of the Fulbright program with Turkey, new grant opportunities are available for U.S. scholars interested in visiting Turkish universities during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Turkey is attractive for American scholars and professionals, because of its location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, its cultural history and religious diversity. The program has approximately eight awards available each year. Awards may be in any academic, artistic or professional field, and range in duration from and a half to nine months in length. Preference is for awards of academic-year duration. Teaching is in English, and can be at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Some awards, for instance the American Studies award, can only be accommodated by  universities that have  related departments, so it is good to contact program staff at CIES  or former Fulbright scholars with any questions about a potential host institution. It is recommended that applicants check the Turkish Higher Education Council’s web page for more information about universities in Turkey. Letters of invitation are not necessary. Please see award descriptions for more information.

U.S. scholars and professionals in all academic fields are encouraged apply. Preferred subjects are: law, political science, economics, history, science, and arts. Discipline specific awards are available, as follows: business administration and economics, TEFL/applied linguistics, American studies or American literature, social sciences and humanities, science and technology.

There is a unique award available in Turkey, All Disciplines: Collaborative Teaching and Research, in which an American scholar and a Turkish scholar will collaborate on designing a single joint teaching or teaching/research project. The American scholar will carry out their grant activity in Turkey in collaboration with the Turkish colleague, and the Turkish scholar will carry out their grant activity in the U.S. in collaboration with the American colleague. Each applicant should apply to the Fulbright office in his/her home country.

Applications are welcome from all qualified applicants; early career applicants will be considered. For teaching awards, applicants should have at least two years of university teaching experience.
Scholars interested in a grant in Turkey must submit an application by August 1, 2011.
