Comments: Created in 1976 to institutionalize the teaching of American history, culture and language at the University of Helsinki, the Fulbright Bicentennial Chair is considered the oldest and most established of the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs. Currently, the Renvall Institute offers North American studies up to the Ph.D. degree. The Chair serves as an important resource to other Finnish universities and has played a central role in the development of an interdisciplinary approach to American studies at the University of Helsinki as well as four other universities with American studies programs (Tampere, Turku, Oulu and Jyvaskyla). The Chair position includes free housing, a spacious, fully-furnished Bicentennial Residence, situated in the city center, about a 5-minute walk from the Renvall Institute. General information on Finland is available at www.cies.org/country/finland.htm. The Finnish Commission strongly encourages potential applicants to visit the Commission's Web site www.fulbright.fi for more information and to contact the Commission directly with any questions.
