The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has named 43 Hispanic-Serving Institutions as “Fulbright HSI Leaders” for 2022. This designation recognizes the noteworthy engagement that selected Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) have achieved with the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's premier international educational exchange program, during the 2021-2022 academic year.
The 43 Fulbright HSI Leaders, announced on October 10 during the international plenary session at the annual conference of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), include four Associate Institutions, five Baccalaureate and Special Focus Institutions, 10 Masters Institutions, and 24 Doctoral Institutions.
This initiative is part of the U.S. State Department’s long-standing commitment to build diversity and inclusion within the Fulbright Program and within all the Bureau’s international exchange programs. ECA has established this designation to acknowledge the strong partnerships between the Fulbright Program and HSIs, and to encourage the entire network of HSIs to increase their Fulbright engagement. Having strong HSI participation in Fulbright is critical to fully representing the diversity of the United States through the Program.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Academic Programs Ethan Rosenzweig, speaking on behalf of ECA, which sponsors the Fulbright Program, announced the Fulbright HSI Leaders on October 10 during an international plenary session at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) annual conference in San Diego.
In his remarks, DAS Rosenzweig noted the strong relationship between HSIs and the Fulbright Program stating, “The Fulbright Program’s success with HSIs is built on real collaboration with you and your institutions.” He thanked HSI leaders for their collaboration and for recognizing the value of the Fulbright Program in deepening campus internationalization efforts; and he recognized Fulbright campus liaisons and advisors for recruiting and advising applicants. He also commended current Fulbright participants and alumni from and hosted by HSIs for sharing “their expertise, experience, perspective, and enthusiasm with their institutions, their communities, and their societies.”
A hallmark of the Fulbright Program is its longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion, striving to ensure that its participants reflect U.S. society and societies abroad. The program collaborates with a host of diversity-related groups, such as the White House Initiative on HBCUs, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange, the American Association of Community Colleges, Diversity Abroad, and many others.
On November 7, a Fulbright HSI Virtual Workshop will feature representatives of Fulbright HSI Leaders sharing best practices for HSIs to leverage Fulbright Program engagement to support students and faculty, increase campus internationalization, and build global networks. This virtual event is open to the public and while all are welcome, the session is specifically designed for HSI faculty, staff, and stakeholders. Participants can register at apply.iie.org/register/HSIWorkshop2022.
For over 75 years, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 participants – selected for their academic merit and leadership potential – with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to seeking solutions to challenges and supporting goals of communities and countries worldwide, such as addressing climate change and fostering economic prosperity, public health, and food security. Over 1,900 diverse U.S. students, artists, and early career professionals in more than 100 different fields of study receive Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants annually to study, teach English, and conduct research overseas. In addition, more than 800 U.S. scholars, artists, and professionals from all backgrounds teach or conduct research overseas through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program annually.
